The Gate of the Year

I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year,

'Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.'

And he replied, 'Go into the darkness

and put your hand into the hand of God.

That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way!'

So I went forth and finding the Hand of God

Trod gladly into the night.

He led me towards the hills

And the breaking of day in the lone east.

So heart be still!

What need our human life to know

If God has comprehension?

In all the dizzy strife of things

Both high and low, God hides his intention."

I've been interested in this poem as I have a copy on a poster.

There doesn't seem to be a full version of the poem on the Internet. My copy has another 15 lines.

There also seems to be some confusion about the nationality of Minnie Louise Haskins. Research I've followed indicates she was born in Bristol not USA.

Anyway it's very inspiring.

Hi Winifred!
Thanks for commenting on the poem. I've also done research, due to the confusion, and what I've found is posted on my other blog "Called to Write".
Warm greetings, Petra.
